Growing to be a mature Christian takes time and discipline. It does not happen instantly nor automatically. As the saying goes "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" the first step you need to take to grow your faith in Christ is by making a decision to devote a portion of your time everyday to be with God and to hear His voice.
There are many ways God can speak to us and one of them is through His written words which is called the Bible. As we read the Bible, we begin to see and understand God's character: how He works in our life as well as the live of others. In Discover Church, we run a daily devotional program, which we call "Life journalling" that allows us to not only read through the entire Bible in a year, but also to record and put to action what God has spoken to us. Without writing it down, we may forget some very important lessons in our life and worse, we might repeat our mistakes in the future!
When we life journal, we record 4 things represented by the acronym SOAP:
Scripture
You read your Bible under today's reading plan, pick one scripture that particularly spoke to you, and record it in your journal. if you do not currently have any Bible reading plan then you can download it here
Observation
What do you think God is saying to you in this scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to teach and to reveal Jesus to you. Paraphrase and write this Scripture down in your own words in your journal.
Application
Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, revelation of a new promise
Prayer
This can be as simple as asking God to help you use with this Scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Write down your prayer in your journal.
(To find out more on how our life journalling program work, we have recorded an hour of this teaching into CD which you can get it directly from our online store in CD or in MP3 format)
Spending time in prayer is also another form of devotion where we have the privilege to exchange communication with God directly. Prayer is not a one-way direction where we keep on talking or asking God to do something for us, rather it is a two-way conversation where we also allow ourselves to hear what God has to say to us.
As a Christian, we have a hotline access to God's throne room and He loves to be with us in prayer and worship. He hears our prayers and He also answer them. We have seen miracles after miracles happening in our ministry, government, or even nations as a result of our prayer activities. Start your prayer activity today at your own private time or you can also get yourself involved in our weekly prayer meeting where you will have the opportunity to learn how to pray as well as receiving encouragements from other believers.
